The fish and the catch
Mackerel is a pelagic, fast-swimming fish that in the summer and autumn is found in vast schools along the Norwegian coast, Skagerak, North Sea and the southern Norwegian Sea. The European mackerel is divided into two stocks: one west of the British Isles and the other in the North Sea and the Skagerrak.

At the end of the year, the sexually mature members of the stock migrate from the North Sea to the spawning areas west and southwest of Ireland, where spawning begins in March.

Norwegian quota is set to be 15 700 tons for 2000. Fishing takes place primarily in the summer half of the year. Fleets vary from boats using nets and trawl lines along the coast to oceangoing purse seiners.

Nutritional content
Mackerel is low in fats (approx. 3 ) in the spring, while a mackerel in autumn can contain 30% fat and thus an abundance of Omega 3 fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of vitamins D and B12.
