The fish and the catch
Saithe lives both as a pelagic and a bottom fish, at depths from 0-1000 feet. It lives in schools that can be immense if a sufficient food supply is present. The saithes' spawning occurs partly at the fish banks from Lofoten and southwards, and partly in the North Sea. Fry drift passively northwards with the coastal current, and young saithe turn up at spring on the west and south coasts, and as late as August on the Finnmark county coast.
Saithe migrate extensively from their feeding and growing areas to their spawning grounds. Saithe is one of Norway's main commercial species. Fishing occurs in coastal waters, in North Norway primarily north of the North Cape. East of the North Cape, it is mainly fished with seines near and in the fjords. The banks off West Finnmark, Troms county and Vesterålen are also particularly rich for saithe fisheries.
In the beginning of 1993, marine researchers asserted that the spawning stock of both southern and northern stocks is historically low, and comprehensive regulation of saithe catches is being maintained.
Nutritional content
Saithe, like other codfish, is primarily an excellent protein source, but it also contains a lot of vitamin B12 and selenium, and an advantageous ratio of potassium to sodium.
